There are a number of things you can do to help prepare for your surgery. If you are scheduled for surgery at Sierra Surgical Hospital, we recommend that you please follow these guidelines and any other specific recommendations your physician gives you. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure your successful surgery.
- Eating and Drinking Before Your Surgery.
You may eat a “light” meal the evening before surgery. Do not eat solid foods after midnight unless instructed otherwise. Parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) of children who are breast-fed or formula fed need to speak to a Case Management nurse for restrictions. - Medications.
If you take medication routinely for any condition, ask your doctor if the medication should be taken the day of surgery. Examples: insulin, blood pressure medication, heart medication, blood thinners, and over the counter medications. Please bring a list of your current medications with the dosages that are taken.
Over the Counter Medications. It is recommended that the following medications be discontinued 7 days prior to surgery:
- Aspirin, unless prescribed by a doctor
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil
- Garlic
- Fish oil
- Vitamin E
- Smoking.
It is recommended that you do not smoke for at least twelve (12) hours before or after your surgery. The hospital is smoke-free, and is located on a smoke-free medical campus. - Change in Health Condition.
Notify your surgeon of any change in your physical condition, such as a bad cold or sore throat. - Prescriptions.
If your surgeon has given you a prescription prior to surgery, fill it beforehand since you will be tired and groggy after surgery.
