Consumer Reports Gives
Sierra Surgery Hospital
Top Marks in Patient Ratings

(August 23, 2009) ---- Sierra Surgery Hospital says its mission is to provide patients and families with a unique healthcare experience, one that puts the patient at the center of everything and delivers both quality care and exceptional personal service. Apparently it’s working very well.

Consumer Reports’ online health site, consumerreportshealth.org, gives Sierra Surgery Hospital in Carson City the highest patient rating among hospitals in Nevada. The ratings are based on a federal government survey, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey, which is given to over a million patients across the country. Consumer Reports uses the data from the survey to create a user friendly rating system that helps patients compare hospitals. The survey covers more than 3,400 hospitals nationwide.

“We are extremely pleased with this recognition,” said Sierra Surgery Hospital Chief Executive Office Jim Sergeant, “Our doctors, nurses, and staff work very hard to give each patient everything we want our own family members to have when they are in the hospital. It’s rewarding that patients appreciate what we do here.”

Hospitality and attention to detail are the cornerstones of Sierra Surgery Hospital’s reputation. Patients and their doctors use the hospital for a wide range of elective surgeries and for certain other services like diagnostic imaging, Breast Center care, and pain management. Sierra opened in 2005 in partnership with Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare. The smaller, physician-owned hospital is located on the Carson Tahoe Medical Campus.

The survey on which the Consumer Reports ratings are based, asked patients to rate their recent healthcare experiences according to eight separate measures of care. Sierra received an overall patient satisfaction score of 82 out of 100 points, outscoring the next highest Nevada hospital by a 5-point margin. Ninety-six percent of patients surveyed said that doctors and nurses at Sierra Surgery Hospital always or usually communicated well with them. 94 percent of the patients surveyed said their pain was always or usually well controlled. Likewise, patients consistently found the staff provided help when it was needed and the rooms were quiet and clean.

Consumer Reports tells readers its hospital ratings are designed to help them compare and choose hospitals. Knowing a hospital’s overall score increases consumers’ chances of being satisfied with their visit, the publication says.

“All of us are determined to provide cutting-edge care in an environment where personal service and genuine respect are top priorities. This survey confirms we’re succeeding,” said Sergeant. “We have a fairly narrow focus and, because of that, we are able to perform our job exceedingly well. Our goal is to personalize the healthcare experience one patient at a time.”

Subscribers to Consumer Reports’ online service, consumerreportshealth.org, can access the hospital ratings over the Internet.
