There are many types of pain which can affect every part of the body. Pain is often referred to as the body’s chief method of self-preservation by warning that injury or damage is taking place.

Pain can be the result of injury, disease, or overuse and can be short-term or long-lasting.

Common causes of pain include muscle and joint disorders, including arthritis, headaches, migraines, neuropathic (nerve) problems, diabetes and cancer. Less common, but very painful conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) can affect multiple parts of the body.

Pain is traditionally placed in two categories – acute and chronic. The major difference between these two forms of pain is the duration of the pain sensation. Acute pain can be severe, but will usually only last for a short period of hours or days. Chronic pain will often last for weeks, months, and even years and can recur over time.

According to a survey conducted by the National Institutes of Health, the most common pain reported is low back pain, followed by severe headaches and migraines, then neck pain. Each of these causes may require varying levels of pain management to control pain. One in four adults report suffering from a day-long bout of pain during the last month, with one in 10 experiencing pain that lasts several months and even years.
