Common Reasons for Total Joint Replacement The reason most people have joint replacement surgery is pain. Ongoing, severe, and chronic pain resulting from deterioration of cartilage in the knee or hip joint, resulting in bone-on-bone contact is most often the catalyst for joint replacement surgery. For most, other treatment modalities have not achieved the desired result. Medications, either over-the-counter or prescription; exercise; physical therapy and steroid injections are often the treatment paths taken prior to surgery. However, some patients are immediate candidates for joint replacement surgery because of pain and other circumstances. Your physician will discuss all treatment options with you. |
