Common Problems of the Foot and Ankle

The pressure put on your feet and ankles with every step you take is tremendous. Because of gravity, simply walking puts one and a half times your body weight on your feet. Add to that the fact most Americans log more than 1,000 miles on their feet each year, and it becomes apparent why foot and ankle injuries and disorders are quite common.

The most common foot and ankle injury is a sprained ankle in which a ligament is injured. This injury can occur during athletic activity or while simply walking. Other common ailments of the foot and ankle include:

  • Achilles tendon injury
  • Stress fractures caused by overuse
  • Heel disorders, such as plantar fasciitis
  • Bunions
  • Gout
  • Pain brought on by arthritis.

Diagnosing foot and ankle problems traditionally involves reviewing medical history and a physical examination by a physician or orthopedic specialist. Many patients visit a podiatrist for an evaluation. If the physician believes the injury or disorder requires further evaluation, you will undergo diagnostic imaging using X-ray, CT scan, or MRI.

Treatment options for foot and ankle problems usually begin with rest, ice, and elevation. Your physician may prescribe certain footwear and orthotics to be placed in your shoes. Further treatment may involve compression, using orthotic sleeves and braces and pain medications. Surgery, whether utilizing minimally invasive arthroscopic technology or traditional open incision, may be required to relieve pain and stabilize the foot or ankle joint by repairing ligaments or using pins or screws.
