Getting My Results

Mammography facilities are required to notify you of the results of your mammogram in writing within 30 days of your exam. Our facility will contact you if additional testing is recommended based on your screening exam.

Most importantly, if you don’t receive word from the facility within 30 days, you need to contact the facility or your doctor and get the results of your screening.

Do not assume not hearing means nothing is wrong.

If the screening mammogram has revealed a potential abnormality, further testing is indicated. Your doctor may order specialized mammographic views and/or ultrasound to determine if there is a significant finding. Ultrasound is particularly useful when a breast mass is detected because it can distinguish a cyst, which is a benign fluid-filled sac, from a solid tumor.

In the majority of cases, the finding will be related to normal breast tissue overlapping or fibrocystic changes in the breast. Based on these findings, most women return to screening in one year. Some women will fall into the category of “probably benign,” which means there is a 98 percent chance the finding is benign, and these women undergo follow up imaging in six months.

If a suspicious abnormality is confirmed by additional imaging, a biopsy will be scheduled.
