The American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology recommend annual screening mammograms for women age 40 and older.
Women who are at higher risk for developing breast cancer based on family history may be directed to begin regular screening mammograms at an earlier age. For instance, if a woman’s mother or sister developed cancer at age 45, screening mammograms may be recommended beginning at 35.
NCI identifies other factors that have been determined to increase the risk of developing breast cancer:
• Personal history of breast cancer
• Certain breast changes on biopsy
• Genetic alterations
• Reproductive and menstrual history
• Long-term use of menopausal hormone therapy
• Radiation therapy
• DES
• Body weight
• Physical activity level
• Alcohol use
It is important for you to follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding screening mammography and be sure to have an open dialogue about your concerns and risk factors that may put you at increased risk of developing breast cancer.
