Current NIH Guidelines

The National Institutes for Health have established national guidelines for weight-loss (bariatric) surgery.

The American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery has also adopted these requirements for patients:

Surgical therapy should be considered for individuals who:

  • have a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40 kg/m2 OR
  • have a BMI equal to or greater than 35 kg/m2 and significant comorbidities AND
  • show that dietary attempts at weight control have been ineffective
These guidelines are followed by the Sierra Surgery Hospital. For patients with a BMI of 35 or greater, the additional medical conditions (comorbidities) may include heart disease, severe sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. In addition to these established guidelines, the specialists at Sierra Surgery Hospital will conduct a thorough evaluation of each patient to assess their candidacy for bariatric surgery.
